Fisherman's Bastion, Budapest

The Bastion is only just visible as a disjointed reflection in a modern hotel facade.  Despite the clash of old and new in this picture Budapest is still a wonderfully preserved city that has largely escaped the destruction of historical buildings.  So much so that it has become a hotspot for staging period cinema action set in the middle of the 20th century.

Bibliotek, St Gallen, Switzerland

Dating from the 9th century, the St Gallen library is one of the oldest and richest in the world and it establishes the town's celebrated status in art history.  It contains major artefacts relating to the history of Western civilization since Late Antiquity, including the famous Plan of St Gall. The interior is magnificently ornate, with stunning cabinetry and beautifully painted ceiling panels.  To preserve the floor visitors have to wear special slippers that cover their shoes, which means that the ancient marquetry floors are polished every day.  The Biblotek at the Abbey of St Gall was among the first of Switzerland's cultural heritage sites to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Music Room, Warwick Castle, UK

After 374 years in the Greville family, in 1978 Warwick Castle was sold to a media and entertainment company, the Tussauds Group for £1.3 million, who established it as a tourist attraction, complete with their display of wax figures.  To many, this has destroyed the historical significance and ambience of the castle.  But it does have the ability to transport you back in time in a convincing way, in the very rooms where nobles and royalty relaxed.

"The Locals" – Temple of Heaven, Beijing

Close scrutiny from several military clad gentlemen could make you a little wary – until they reveal that they want to practise their English and take a photo with the tourists.  Here they smile for the camera before we take selfies with their cameras.  Their unaffected friendliness and genuine happiness was an unexpected find in such a busy city.
