Chinese Gate at Disney EPCOT Centre
Visitors to Disney's EPCOT Centre in Orlando remark how they seem to be transported to other lands as they walk around the World Showcase. There are faithful representations of different architecture from 12 different nations around a central lake, with the customary entertainment showcasing each culture. At the China exhibit there is a welcoming gate and a small-scale replica of the Temple of Heaven from Beijing.

Roofline, Rothenburg ob der Tauber
There is a timeless sense of style in these pastel rendered buildings. A very closely cropped image was taken to shut out all but the primary elements I wanted – the angles, the geometry, the colours, the textures and lastly the sign, which places this in its Bavarian context.

Monument Valley, Utah
Monument Valley’s mesas have been seen in their fair share of spaghetti westerns and cigarette commercials, mostly with late afternoon sun highlighting the deep red colours of the natural rock. I wanted to show something else... the scale of these formations, how they contrast with the flat landscape and the fact that they are a hotspot on the tourist trail rather than being isolated in the desert. So a high vantage point was chosen with a good perspective on the winding road. By waiting until a congregation of cars made their trek to the inner valley it speaks to reality of their setting, but it does not take away from the spectacle and beauty of this natural wonder.

Buddies, Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Once a year the townsfolk of Rothenburg dress in medieval costume and parade through the streets, vying for the first prize awarded by the Burgermeister, who judges their marching bands with a wave of his feathered hat. These three seemed too merry to do well in the competition and moments after the photo was taken two of them threw the main subject into the town’s fountain.

Atomic Dome, Ground Zero, Hiroshima
The Atomic Dome stands as a poignant reminder of the nuclear explosion that devastated Hiroshima in 1945. It was one of the few buildings to survive largely intact at the epicentre of the explosion. Today the building and adjacent Peace Park are the focal point for thoughts of peace. Taking a picture at night can bring pleasant surprises and I was captivated by the brilliant green of the floodlights and inner glow from the incandescent lighting inside the building. I looked for contrasts and wanted to accentuate the dark shrouding of the building, so I took this photo from back in the shadows of the park.
