An Exhibition of Photography by Paul Hogie

Dance Troupe, Xian, China

Visitors to Xian in central China can view the entombed warriors, located in the ground where they have stood for over 2,000 years.  In the city there is a theatre recreating the experience of an imperial dinner and performance using instruments that have been re-crafted from drawings found in ancient scrolls and paintings.  The meal, costumes and pageantry are all spectacular.  This is just a small taste of a dynamic and visually stimulating show.

Horseshoe Bend, Goosenecks State Park, Utah

Millions of years of erosion by water, wind, frost, and gravity cut into this relatively flat plateau in southern Utah creating a meandering river valley.  As the ground has slowly risen over millions of years erosion kept the river flowing on its original course with the dramatic results we see today at Serpentine Ridge where the river is 1,000 feet below our vantage point.  The San Juan River here joins the Colorado River lower down to contribute to an even greater erosion valley at the Grand Canyon.

Ribbon Dance, Imperial Theatre, Xian, China

Photos of stage performances are made difficult by the relatively low light conditions and rapid movement of the subjects.  In this picture I was able to find a compromise with a shutter speed that still kept some slightly blurred movement in the silk ribbons but was able to maintain the principal subject in sharp relief within the single spotlight of white light.  The vivid colour of the stage lighting helped to dramatise the scene and transform the otherwise white ribbons into bands of fire.

Brugge, Belgium

This view from the old Bell Tower in Brugge provides an overhead perspective that helps to isolate the boat in the canal.  It tells a small part of the story about this splendid medieval city – often called the “Venice of the North”.
