Disney Ride, Anaheim, California

A photo that is again a matter of timing... for the slow shutter speed to create a feeling of movement, and for the exact time of day when the twilight sky matches the feature lighting that shines on this space capsule carousel.  The end result looks like a sculptural installation.

Galeries Lafayette, Paris

The beautiful glass dome in the centre of Galeries Lafayette Paris Haussmann in Paris is an unexpected find in a major 10-story department store.  Businessmen Alphonse Kahn and Théophile Bader built the building and the Art Nouveau staircase in 1912.  The dome itself covers 1000m2 and was created by master glass worker Jacques GRUBER in the “Art nouveau” style.  This picture leaves no doubt as to why the store is classified as an historic monument and this image merges old world charm with a modern retail setting.

Summer Palace in winter, Beijing

There is a certain irony in seeing the Chinese Emperor’s Summer Palace surrounded by a frozen lake.  On this late afternoon it was -15C but still there were many people taking a stroll across the ice, which added interest to the key subject.  My vantage point presented the leafless trees and the pavilion as silhouettes so that the overall image looked more like a black and white photo,  helping to convey the sense of cold.

Coach and Horses Inn, Mayfair

The Coach & Horses Inn in the upmarket Mayfair district of London is an island of activity in an otherwise sterile business and residential district. This was a spontaneous photo, framed quickly to capture the position of the patrons, but later I realised that the overall composition and lighting enhanced the scene more than I had expected, providing a depth that extended into the street beyond. The natural placement of the patrons outside the pub was perfect for telling the story.

"Coils”, Shanghai acrobats

An acrobatic feat!  This performer demonstrates her hula-hoop twirling magic in the Shanghai theatre.  Using only the theatre lighting created a more dramatic effect because of the strong shadows and the coloured highlights that played on the coils.  It required a steadier hand and careful shutter speed selection because of the limited light available..
