Pfronten, from Falkenstein Castle, Bavaria

Ludwig II of Bavaria had plans to restore four castles.  His most famous is the beautiful Neuschwanstein – subject of so many postcards.  But he also purchased Falkenstein Castle ruins in 1883.  His plans for restoring it were undermined by his extravagant spending on other castles, almost bankrupting the State of Bavaria. Ludwig was attracted to the commanding view and liked to stand at the peak and see the countryside at night.  So it is fitting that this photo was taken late one winter night from the parapet walls in the ruins of the 13th century castle.  It shows the town of Pfronten, the nearby ski slopes all lit up for skiers and the glow of distant cities at the horizon.

Rothenburg Town Square

Rothenburg Ob der Tauber is the best preserved mediaeval city in Germany. It is still encircled by an intact 12th century wall and its clocktower gates are iconic landmarks featured in countless postcards and as the backdrop for many movies.  All the buildings inside the city wall are in their original state.  It is like stepping back in time.   The Renaissance Town Hall is attached to an original mediaeval building that features a 61m tower, giving a commanding view over the township and the surrounding countryside.

Bibliotek - St Gallen, Switzerland

Dating from the 9th century, the St Gallen library is one of the oldest and richest in the world and it establishes the town's celebrated status in art history.  It contains major artefacts relating to the history of Western civilization since Late Antiquity, including the famous Plan of St Gall. The interior is magnificently ornate, with stunning cabinetry and beautifully painted ceiling panels.  To preserve the floor visitors have to wear special slippers that cover their shoes, which means that the ancient marquetry floors are polished every day.  The Biblotek at the Abbey of St Gall was among the first of Switzerland's cultural heritage sites to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage list.

EPCOT Space Dome, Orlando, Florida

Late afternoon sunset, combined with different hues from the spotlights reflected on the many mirrored facets the Space Dome at Disney’s EPCOT Centre, creates an image that appears almost contrived, or even computer generated.  But the only tricks involved were the choice of a long lens, the right time of day and a careful exposure.

Albufeira skyline, Portugal

Albufiera in Portugal is a charming and rustic seaside holiday destination.  The whitewashed buildings are reminiscent of the Greek islands, but the culture and relaxed nature of the Algarve coast speaks for itself.  In The deep hue of the water accentuates the stark white buildings and creates an air of mystery.

Ghost Gondolas, Venice

Those who have visited Venice know that the days there consist of walking many hours walking to explore countless narrow laneways, being spoilt by fine food and absorbing the busy and vibrant retail energy that envelopes you everywhere you turn.  It is only when you slow down and find a place to sit and enjoy the view that the scale and beauty of Venice is most evident.  Sitting by the water’s edge I waited until the moon was the primary lighting source and set up a long exposure, aided only by the flash from my second camera, used from the side to lighten the shadows and give some definition to the rocking gondolas.
