This site is being published as a means to unlock and share my historical collection of rally photographs that were taken from 1977 to 1982 at events in Canberra, around Australia and overseas. I am gradually digitising my negatives and slides and will publish more as I progress. My hope is this will bring back memories of an era when you could take your daily drive, with a few safety modifications, onto a dirt road and have some real fun. I was lucky to photograph some of the rally greats, both Australian and international, over that time. You will recognise many of the leading drivers. But I always had a desire to record as many competitors as I could practically cover, balancing my commitments to have photos worthy of winners for publication and reporting on these events. So you might also find photos of cars all the way through the entry list. This often required some patience and endurance as events could stretch well into the early hours of the morning.
The results are not always pretty. But nonetheless I have decided to upload all of the available photos or each event, not just the best pictures I had taken. This way there is always an opportunity that somebody looking for a photo of their car from one of these events will have the best chance of finding it.
Of course the technology of the 1970s was a far cry from today where we have smartphones with 50 mega-pixel cameras and inbuilt image enhancement. Try filming with manual exposure, manual pull-focusing on fast moving objects and only 36 photos before you open up the camera and load a new film. And there is always the available light, weather, dust, possible vantage points and other factors that introduce their challenges. The old film resolutions in todays terms might have been equivalent to a 12 or 18 mega-pixel camera, or less. Of course this was the pinnacle of photo technology in its day. My photo collection reveals all of these difficulties.
I welcome the opportunity to talk about any of the pictures and about those rally days in generral. Look for the link on the Home Page (link on the top right of this page) for how you can obtain a copy of any of these images.
