"Karakakooa on Owhyee" - copy of 18th century engraving

A famous image of Kealakekua Bay in Hawaii where Captain Cook landed, and was later killed in a dispute over stolen boats.  The title of the image reflects the phonetic interpretation of the first explorers with place names spoken by the indigenous peoples.  An interesting aspect of this particular engraving is that it is first ever to depict a person using a surfboard, with a Hawaiian villager paddling on their surfboards toward Cook's ship, the HMS Resolution.  This is a reproduction print from 1970.

19th century engraving of the Sphynx, Egypt

The SPHINX. Called by the Arabs " Father of Terrors." The Sphynx faces the east, and is hewn out of the natural rock. Wood engraving from 'Picturesque Palestine, Sinai and Egypt' by Wilson, Charles William, Sir, 1836-1905; Lane-Poole, Stanley, 1854-1931 Volume 4. Published in 1884 by J. S. Virtue and Co, London.  Major-General Sir Charles Wilson's survey in 1864 led to the formation of the Palestine Exploration Fund and a general survey which Wilson made of the area between Beirut and al-Khalil showed how little was known of the antiquities of Palestine, and the need for a proper archaeological investigation.  The original volume from which this engraving was taken contains many large woodcuts illustrating architecture, arts and crafts, especially chapter III.
