Shadow People, Eiffel Tower, Paris

From a vantage point above, on the platform of the Eiffel Tower, the pedestrians below look elongated.  But this is only their shadow.  Those shadows reveal much more about the subjects than a view of just a head and shoulders.

Grouse Mountain night skiing, Vancouver BC

With the effort of reaching my vantage point high on Grouse Mountain it was hard to resist staying there until the light eventually faded. And then the scene takes on a different dimension.  Gone is the soft light.  It is replaced with strong contrasts and, using a long lens, it brings the city into focus; showing just how close the city is to this playground.

Prague Castle and Charles Bridge

The sheer size of the 1200 year old Prague Castle is impressive, and at over half a kilometre long it is the largest castle in the world.  With such a long history it has been home to many rulers and boasts almost every architectural style that exists.  The museums in the castle and the Crown Jewels that are housed there draw huge numbers of visitors who all seem to make their way there across the Charles Bridge.  As though mindful of the photographers art the city lights up the buildings with meticulous care.  Then it becomes a waiting game – waiting for the moment when the light in the sky is just right to balance the scene painted by the floodlights.     Overall 940 x 370

Fountain – Place de la Concorde, Paris

The Fontaines des Mers, or Fountain of the Sea holds a central place in the Place de la Concorde in Paris.  Motorists frantically circle these beautiful fountains, often without the slightest glance.  But these wonderful classical statues are a marvellous example mid 19th century creativity.

View from Montparnasse, Paris

Such a clear view of Paris is rare, so I was lucky when the afternoon rain cleared the air and the clouds lifted.  On top of Montparnasse Tower it was bitterly cold but the reward was in getting the right result.  A picture on this scale presents several challenges.  Firstly you need to capture a wide 120 field of view.  The second challenge is achieving clarity in such a large format print.  Both of these are helped by the photographic process in which multiple images are carefully joined together using a telephoto lens to capture the detail and very long exposures to ensure that all of the image is well lit.  The process takes a long time.  Photographing the 43 images that make up this panorama took almost an hour and produced a 930Mb image file.  The result is an image which not only has interesting photographic qualities because of its subject and lighting, but it has a level of detail that makes for a great process of discovery to search across the image to identify people and landmarks.  It is a real conversation piece.     Overall 900 x 400

Rothenburg Town Square from above

This town is a wonderful picture from every angle and location.  Here we can see the well preserved buildings within the walls of the medieval city, viewed from the tower on the Rothenburg Town Hall.
