National Gallery Sculpture Museum, Washington DC

What appears to be a geometric art installation is actually a series of skylights to bring light to galleries below that link the East and West buildings of the National Gallery of Art.  Not a curved line to be seen here.  It forms an arresting image that seems contrived to emphasise the modern rigid architecture of the East Wing Building which is dominated by sharp angles and irregular rooms.

Pont Alexandre III cherub, Paris

Instead of avoiding the rain it can often create an opportunity for photography.  On this occasion it helped to give a glossy shine to the beautiful bronze statues and the reflections on the road. This most beautiful bridge in Paris was named after Tsar Alexander III and was opened in 1900, just in time for the Universal Exposition.  This cherub holds a trident and is balanced by others at each end of the bridge.

Austrian Parliament, Vienna

The busy nature of some architecture overpowers the eyes with detail at first glance, but that can be much of the charm as you explore and take in what they have to offer.  This is true of the Austrian Parliament, an ostentatious display of Greek revival architecture from the late 1800s.  There's a lot going on in this picture.  It is a successful collaboration of many architectural styles and sculptural media that presents an imposing entrance to Austria's parliament.

Gamla Stan, Stockholm

This is a magical place, Gamla Stan – the old town on an bustling, compact island in the heart of Stockholm.  The architecture is charming with cobbled streets and colourful 17th- and 18th-century buildings.  In the old town are the medieval Storkyrkan cathedral and the Royal Palace – the king's residence.  At night it comes alive with night spots, chic cocktail bars and stylish restaurants nestled in centuries-old basements.  Stockholm also has such wonderful seasonal contrasts, with its warm summer evenings and the blanket of snow that covers it in winter, when you can walk across the frozen harbour to fish through holes cut in the ice.
