Neuschwanstein Castle, Bavaria

Better known as a jigsaw puzzle subject or the inspiration for Disney's Enchanted Castle, Neuschwanstein Castle is usually shown from the front, where it appears to nestle amongst the high mountains that surround it. When you climb the hills behind the castle you can appreciate its isolated location perched on a knoll with a rushing stream carving the valley alongside.  The extra wide perspective of this particular picture and the strong shadows in the valley below help to place the castle in its proper geographical context.

National Sculpture Gallery, Washington DC

The East Building of the National Gallery of Art in Washington is itself modern sculpture.  The brutal lines of this building look even more unusual at night, especially with the angular skylights in the foreground that bring light to the underground galleries.

"The Locals" - Temple of Heaven, Beijing

Close scrutiny from several military clad gentlemen could make you a little wary – until they reveal that they want to practise their English and take a photo with the tourists.  Here they smile for the camera before we take selfies with their cameras.

Fontaines des Mers – Place de la Concorde, Paris

The Fontaines des Mers, or Fountain of the Sea have recently been refurbished and re-gilt.  They were designed by Jacques Ignace Hittorff, and completed in 1840 during the reign of King Louis-Philippe. This fountain commemorates the maritime spirit of France.  On this spot many executions occurred during the French Revolution, including Louis XVI and Marie-Antionette..

Red Doorway, Forbidden City, Beijing

This is a doorway into the heart of the Forbidden City.  It provides a bright frame to isolate and draw your attention to the interior and those enjoying their visit.  It is a contrast between the very old surroundings and the modern age where the public can enter what was once the exclusive domain of the Emperor.  There is an interesting consistency of colour tones in the flaking paint on the wall, the bright red portal and the buildings in the background that all create a consistent colour theme for this picture.

Crystal Mountain, Washington State

Sometimes the wrong things happen for the right reasons.  Travelling through Washington state to see Mount Rainier we took the side road up to Crystal Mountain.   Half a metre of snow in the lay-by halfway up the mountain should have been no match for our big four-wheel-drive.  However hidden in the snow were large ice-blocks and the car rode up over these, stranding the wheels in the air.  With nowhere to go until help arrived we walked across to the viewing platform to gaze at a marvellous scene.  The overnight snow had dusted everything and created a brilliant silver sheen over the whole scene.    Overall 900 x 400
