Dom Perignon cellars, Epernay
Among the 28 kilometres of Moët et Chandon cellars that are carved out of the chalk beds beneath Epernay in northern France, those housing the vintage Dom Perignon wine are especially inspiring. Each bay in this corridor holds many thousands of bottles, some dating back to 1956, as these are. The light was so dim that it required almost a full minute to expose this picture.

Singers, Warwick Castle, England
A visit to Warwick Castle is made all the more historically engaging by the displays from Madamme Tussaud. In this room they have recreated part of the weekend party that was held in 1898 when Daisy, Countess of Warwick, hosted the Prince of Wales, later Edward VII and other distinguished guests. The dark areas of the room, which is lit only by lighting of the period, add to feeling you get of reaching into the past.

National Gallery of Art, Washington DC
The East Building of the National Gallery of Art in Washington is itself modern sculpture. The brutal lines of this building look even more unusual at night, especially with the angular skylights in the foreground that bring light to the underground galleries.

Forecourt, Caesar's Palace, Las Vegas
There are plenty of pictures of the sights of Las Vegas. All are enhanced by the bright lights luring visitors to try the many methods of gambling away your holiday bankroll. The entrance to Caesar’s Palace was different – being devoid of neon lights. The lighting in particular was so nicely balanced that it made taking the picture easy. Keeping the camera open for a long time enabled a small flash to be used at some distance from the main statue to slightly soften the strongest of the shadows.

Brugge, Belgium
This view from the old Bell Tower in Brugge provides an overhead perspective that helps to isolate the boat in the canal. It tells a small part of the story about this splendid medieval city – often called the “Venice of the North”.
